This sounds like a fun way to get some interest for new courses. Do we have 18 practice baskets? Can we attract enough players? Could this be a new way to do a monthly or two?
I saw this on the blog RattlingChains.com as a comment to the story "Making Disc Golf Visible Exposing new people keys to helping the sport grow." http://rattlingchains.com/?p=2807

Michael Graves says: Actually I started the Pirate Disc Golf Club down here in Clearwater FL. What we do is design a safe and challenging course layout, anywhere from 18 – 21 holes, in a public park that does not have a course (yet..) and bring not one, but 21 baskets and anywhere form 30 – 50 players each time. We try and do it every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. We have started with Eagle Lake Park, but will expand and rotate between parks as we grow.

Its growing in support and popularity down here. Even the Champ Ken Climo pitches in and brings 3 baskets when he can.

We are constantly being asked by other park public what we are doing, where are there course, and where can they get gear.

Now THAT’s exposure and I encourage the spread of the Pirate Disc Golf Club idea nationwide. Gather up your baskets and forge new courses in uncharted lands!

Pretty novel idea.

Because our player base is still a bit small, I'd say we could acquire 9 baskets on loan to do this.
Grafton Lake Park should be our first "target".

I like this idea alot. Reminds of a "flash mob" kinda event.
9 baskets and 10 guys could do a Capitol Mall round.
Wash Park with spotters to protect peds.
Tawasetha (sp?) in Guilderland when there is hundreds of soccer spectators
Marc is on the right track, do it at a park with foot traffic, folks going, "What are you guys doing?"
That's what CPS has done for our area.

I drove through there a couple months ago to look for feasability - a little small, but there are definitely some areas with nice groves that would play nice. Mayb be big enough for a 9-holer.

There's another place up here for this type of Disc Golf-CD Lane Park in Windham.

Dwayne and I used to play Object Golf at Cooks park when we first started. We managed to squeeze in an 18 hole loop, but there really isn't enough room there. We didn't know any better at the time but played real close to roads, pavilions, across basketball courts and such. Also whenever there were little league or soccer games going on, we just couldn't play.

It's been mentioned before, but how about Tawasentha Park in Guilderland? If I recall it was determined it was too crowded with other users for a permanent course. But unlike Cooks park, there is enough room to safely install a temp course while retaining a high public visibility.

breathe life back in to the State Park in Saratoga...

The expansive woods behind Skidmore College? Skidmore has TONS of money ;)

As we get closer to the warmer weather we should move this thread to the tournaments and leagues thread to organize events.

Pick a park and a date and anybody who's available to go out for the day and be visible!!

Can't wait to try it out!

I'm gonna say Saratoga Spa should be our first target.
The plan was there, as was the interest.
But the funds dried up before we could move on it.

My mother in law lives right across Rte 50 from the park so I'm so in for this course and pirate day.

being a self-proclaimed saratoga-townie (although not these days), I've been skiddie-averse (except when they have parties). i've grown up a bit. if someone took the time to let the skiddies know (posters on their campus?), they would come. Could even get in the skiddie paper. In terms of "the paper" the Saratogian would love to cover something like it too. Events in the State park tend to garner a great deal of local attention. I think the Saratogian staffer are mostly bored and need something to justify their existence anyway (actually i'm a fan of the "paper"). Anyhow, the skiddies goto Hyzer in fairly large groups (they show usually in 4s or sometimes 8s and 10s kinda ridiculous but they let us play through, etc).

alas, in disc all boundaries are demolished and as long as the game is going everyone has that in common! :D

...actually, would be nice to see a disc community blossom within the skidmore confines. seriously, they have TONS AND TONS of woods, lots of it trailed. ...long-term strategy, a course should be in Skidmore AND the state park

I kinda spun off the topic a bit but had to say it
